Susceptibility and Geological Hazard to PRM in glacial, proglacial and periglacial environments of the Central Andes of Mendoza. Case study in the Arroyo Grande basin, Tunuyán

Código M060-T1 Tipo: PROYECTO SIIP TIPO 1 BIENAL 2022 Convocatoria 2022 Resolucion Res. 614/2023-R.

The Andean cryosphere regions have a greater Susceptibility to the Mass Removal Processes (PRM) occurrence. We propose, for the first time, carry out a zoning of Hazard and Susceptibility to the occurrence of PRM in the Arroyo Grande basin in the Central Andes of Tunuyan, Mendoza. We plan to undertake studies on the current distribution of the cryosphere, evaluate the climatic dynamics of the region, analyze the tectonic and geological activity of the area, carry out morphometric studies of the basin and in great detail study the processes of mass removal and its local consequences, such as the obstruction of streams and the formation of natural dams. Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques will be used, and the territory will be visited in order to contribute detailed geomorphological information. The identification and characterization of conditioning, triggering and regulating variables of PRM will be fundamental for the subsequent multi-temporal and dynamic probabilistic analysis. The current context of increased environmental temperature and meteorological, hydrological, ecological and economic drought in the region could accelerate these processes. Taking into account that vulnerable ecosystems and important human social activities are concentrated in the region, and waters below it, this study is proposed to provide knowledge for possible management and territorial planning for the mitigation and reduction of Andean geological risk.

RESERVAS Y RECURSOS DE AGUA EN LA CUENCA ALTA DE MENDOZA. CALIDAD DEL AGUA Y DINÁMICA DE LA CRIÓSFERA

WATER RESERVES AND RESOURCES IN THE UPPER BASIN OF MENDOZA. WATER QUALITY AND DYNAMICS OF THE CRYOSPHERE

The Andean basins that develop in arid to semi-arid regions of the Andes mountain range have in the availability of water resources their greatest limitation for the socio-economic development of their populations. These regions with scarce water resources have the main sources of recharge in the headwaters of their Andean basins. It is precisely the upper sector of these basins where the greatest available humidity is concentrated and where the cryogenic processes that determine the emerging flows are developed. The periglacial environment, which is defined based on its characteristic processes and its associated geoforms, presents a wide development in the Central Andes of the province of Mendoza. In the Andean region, Trombotto et al. (2014) define the periglacial environment as a cold and cryogenic environment, but not a glacial one. In addition, they mention the presence of certain indicators, such as the occurrence of permafrost, freeze-thaw cycles, and the presence of solifluction/gelifluction or other cryogenic processes. However, they indicate permafrost as a sine qua non element for the Andes mountain range. The hydrological cycle of mountains in a periglacial environment is highly influenced by a variety of storage characteristics: winter snow cover, perennial or almost perennial snow patches, glaciers and permafrost, added to the more usual storage in other environments such as water. groundwater, soil moisture, lakes and reservoirs. Unfortunately, the influence of montane or alpine permafrost on the hydrological system has received little attention. In addition to the annual influence of the periglacial environment on the hydrological cycle, there is another relevant aspect. Which refers to the volume of water in a solid state that is stored in the different periglacial geoforms, which can be even greater than that stored by the glaciers themselves. This research project attempts to provide valuable information on the dynamic and hydrological processes linked to periglacial geoforms and their influence as water regulators at different spatial and temporal scales. In addition, it also tries to provide information on another relevant aspect, based on dynamic and geomorphological analysis, such as the determination of ice content in periglacial geoforms. Crucial factor to understand the evolution of these geoforms.

EFECTO DEL HIPOTIROIDISMO FRENTE A ESTÍMULOS INFLAMATORIOS SOBRE LA NEUROGÉNESIS Y LA NEUROINFLAMACIÓN.

EFFECT OF HYPOTHYROIDISM AGAINST INFLAMMATORY STIMULI ON NEUROGENESIS AND NEUROINFLAMMATION.

Thyroid hormones (TH) and neuroinflammation alter neurogenesis (NEU) and BDNF, which regulates and promotes this mechanism. The BDNF receptor is Trkb, of which there are three isoforms: Trkb-FL (complete form or full-length), Trkb- T1 and Trkb-T2.In certain injuries, an imbalance between Trkb-FL and Trkb-T1 is produced, favoring the expression of Trkb-T1, which has been associated with neuronal damage. In turn, Trkb-FL is a substrate of calpain that cleaves it produces a truncated receptor similar to TrkB-T1 and an intracellular fragment that is translocated to the nucleus inducing phosphorylation and deregulation of nuclear and axonal proteins.generation of the truncated form Trkb-T1 are still unknown, much less is known in combination with acute inflammatory stimuli in the adult brain. Lipopolysaccharide), on different molecular targets that intervene in the NEU and on the susceptibility to develop neuroinflammation in the adult brain. HypoT will be induced in adult rats (80-90 days) by the administration of the antithyroid drug propylthiouracil (PTU), to which PTU 0.01% will be administered in the drinking water for 40 days. The control group will receive tap water as a drink. To study the interaction between HypoT and an inflammatory stimulus such as LPS, groups of HypoT rats and euthyroid controls (EuT) will be subjected to a single injection of the LPS superantigen. In addition, in vitro tests will be carried out on N2a neuroblastoma cells, simulating a condition of HypoT and neuroinflammation with LPS. Techniques will be performed: radioimmunoassay (hormonal measurement), indirect immunofluorescence, RTqPCR, Western Blot and flow cytometry. The effect on the NEU will be determined by using specific molecular markers (Nestin, doublecortin, NeuN, GFAP, PCNA) in the hippocampus, hypothalamus, prefrontal cortex and striatum. The expression of BDNF, Trkb-FL, the isoform Trkb-T1, and the activity of calpains in the brain areas mentioned will be measured. Whether it increases neuroinflammation will be determined by using glial, leukocyte and inflammatory cell markers such as GFAP, CD45, IL-1β,, IL-6, TNF-α,, NF-κ,B.

Nodulation in primary cultures of Pomacea canaliculata hemocytes (Caenogastropoda, Ampullariidae)

Código M054-T1 Tipo: PROYECTO SIIP TIPO 1 BIENAL 2022 Convocatoria 2022 Resolucion Res. 3713/22-R

Nodulation (sometimes confused with encapsulation, which also implies the participation of fibrous tissue) is widely distributed in Metazoa and could be universally distributed. In previous studies in the gastropod Pomacea canaliculata (Ampullariidae), we have characterized both the immunocompetent cells (hemocytes) and the tissues and organs of the internal defense system. Specifically, we have observed that nodulation is frequent both in primary cultures of hemocytes and in whole animal situations facing immune challenges. In a recent review on ampullariid immunobiology (Rodriguez et al., 2022), we proposed that hemocyte aggregations can occur constitutively (as is the case of renal hemocyte islets) or contingent on microbial aggression (as is the case of nodule formation in response to yeast injection). But what are the factors involved in the formation of these aggregations? In this project, we intend to explore some factors (extracellular traps and uric acid) whose plausibility derives from studies in other models and which until now had not been considered for gastropods. In this way, we propose an in vitro approach that allows the isolation of P. canaliculata hemocyte nodules for study and allows us to characterize the behavior of hemocytes under experimental situations.

The Neuquén Basin is one of the most important places in the world for the study of Cretaceous dinosaurs. However, there are still areas that are poorly explored or where the record of certain vertebrates is scarce. This is the case of the specimen studied in the present project, which represents the first abelisaurid recorded for the province of Mendoza and the northernmost record for the Neuquén Basin. The specimen UNCUYO-LD 308 is represented by ca. 30 bones and fragments of the skull and postcranial bones including vertebrae and appendicular bones. This project will allow the development of several lines of research that will contribute to the anatomical, phylogenetic and taphonomic knowledge of this specimen in particular and of abelisaurids in general. In addition, it will increase the paleobiogeographic knowledge of these vertebrates for Argentina and the rest of the world. Finally, it will provide novel information to better understand the Cretaceous environments and ecosystems where these vertebrates lived, since the specimen is found in fluvial facies with abundant sauropod titanosaurian dinosaurs, flying reptiles, turtles and fish.

Oblique structures in the Andes of Mendoza and San Juan provinces: their role in deformation, fluid migration and seismicity

Código M052-T1 Tipo: PROYECTO SIIP TIPO 1 BIENAL 2022 Convocatoria 2022 Resolucion Res. 3713/22-R

Most work on Andean tectonics is dedicated to N-S structures, which show the most important displacements and determine the general N-S morphology of the Andes. However, other structures oblique to the strike of the Andes are present, with WNW, NW, E-W, NE, and ENE trends, most of which have been identified as regional lineaments. Few works have been dedicated to provide a detailed characterization of these structures, determining their activity periods, the type of movements, and their role in fluid migration. In this project, we propose to study Andean oblique structures in three sectors: (1) in the Peteroa volcano region, in the Cordillera Principal of Mendoza, (2) in the Cordillera Frontal of San Juan province, at the latitude of the Agua Negra international pass, and (3) in the Cordillera Frontal and Precordillera of northern Mendoza. In these three sectors, information on oblique structures is scarce, and preliminary data show that these structures have influenced magmatic and hydrothermal fluid migrations, and that some are seismically active. Therefore, their study and detailed characterization is important not only from an academic point of view, but also for its application to natural hazards and natural resource prospection.

Water quality and availability in the productive oasis of the Uspallata Valley -Mendoza- and future trends under climate change scenarios.

Código M050-T1 Tipo: PROYECTO SIIP TIPO 1 BIENAL 2022 Convocatoria 2022 Resolucion Res. 3713/22-R

This project is focused on the study of the Uspallata basin located in the Andes Range in Mendoza (Argentina). This study site is located in arid environmental regions that are affected by the aspects of climate change. It is forecasted that the climate change effects seen at high elevations will most likely introduce significant alterations in the hydrological cycles of snow/ice-fed rivers and groundwater recharge. The above mentionated effects are mainly due to the increase in temperature and changes in the precipitation regime. Additionally, the accelerated urban growth and the development of productive activities in the study area have also generated impacts on water resources, either by increasing demand or by using them as sinks for the waste generated. In this context and in view of the evidence of the effects of climate change on arid mountain environments, the objective of the present study is to establish the characteristic concentration ranges and spatial distribution of the natural background level and to evaluate the human impact on the system under study. To this aim, we propose 1) physicochemical, microbiological and pesticide monitoring of both surface and groundwater, 2) quantification of water demand by the green and blue water footprint, 3) suitability analysis water resource management and 4) Assessment of groundwater contamination risk. The results will be used to identify the most vulnerable areas of the system. Also they will serve as a basis for the generation of public policies for land-use planning and water management that will guarantee its sustainability.

detection of recombination events in mitochondrial genomes of somatic hybrids using massive sequencing data

Código M048-T1 Tipo: PROYECTO SIIP TIPO 1 BIENAL 2022 Convocatoria 2022 Resolucion Res. 3713/22-R

Homologous recombination (HR) plays a crucial role in shaping the complex architecture of plant mitogenomes. Somatic hybrids between distant species offer an extraordinary model for studying genetic makeup after mitochondria fusion. Recently, our working group found highly chimeric mtDNA in three somatic hybrids between Solanaceae Nicotiana tabacum and Hyoscyamus niger, and Nicotiana tabacum and Physoclaina orientalis. To carry out the analysis, the genome of the somatic hybrids was assembled. However, a well-known difficulty in studying mitochondrial genomes lies in their assembly. The repetitive sequences and the dynamic structure that characterize mtDNA make it impossible to obtain all the alternative conformations of the mitochondrial genome, with the consequent loss of information. To overcome this drawback, we developed a bioinformatics strategy using short pair-end reads to infer recombination events without using the hybrid mitogenome. In the present project, it is proposed to analyze the cybrid formed by the parents Nicotiana tabacum and Anisodus tanguticus, making use of the newly designed strategy.

Mountain systems in the Central Andes are characterized by extreme climatic conditions, and wetlands and associated systems in these areas are key functional units of aquatic reservoirs because they support the majority of the diversity in these regions. In high altitude deserts like these, climate change processes can result in a negative water balance between precipitation, input of wáter from glacier melting, and evaporation, causing extinction or reduction of wetlands towards the summer. Both wetlands and the surrounding riparian areas house unique species with specific microenvironmental requirements. At present, aquatic systems in high altitude areas are threatened by global warming and by human activities. This results in a decrease in connectivity among populations which also may experience a decrease in size resulting in a loss of diversity. Given this, it should be a priority to monitor these ecosystems and implement conservation and restoration practices. To accomplish this, we must first know the flora and fauna present in these environments. There has been some work done on the aquatic fauna of wetlands in this region. However, there are no studies on the riparian fauna. Specifically, in these high altitude habitats, arthropods are a mojar componenet of the fauna, and among them, the arachnids and carabid beetles are important groups given their abundance and their potential as bioindictors. The goal of this porposal is: 1) to describe the arachnid and carabid beetle community from the riparian zone of two high altitude wetlands of the Central Andes, the Tupungato wetland and the Uspallata system, and 2) compare their diversity to that of the communities found in the adjacent semiarid matrix. Individuals will be sampled using pitfall traps given that the majority of the fauna in these habitats is epigean. We expect to find a higher diversity of arachnids and carabid beetles associated to the wetlands and a different species composition between riparian and semiarid habitats. In addition, at the riparian habitat we expect to find unique species that might be used as bioindicators.

Genic and genomic studies of the digestive symbiosis in native invasive gastropods

Código M046-T1 Tipo: PROYECTO SIIP TIPO 1 BIENAL 2022 Convocatoria 2022 Resolucion Res. 3713/22-R

The current project point to generate basic knowledge about the digestive physiology of the invasive species Pomacea canaliculata (Mollusca, Ampullariidae) and other ampullariids, species that have developed a remarkable symbiotic consortium with microorganisms inside of their digestive gland. The presence of digestive symbionts, in particular those intracellular, pigmented endosymbionts that occupy about 25 per cent of volume from the digestive gland acini, will explain the huge polyphagic capacity and the invasive features of this species. By means of the new omic technologies (metagenomics) and by mean of a traditional unigenic approach, which combines both bioinformatics, molecular, and functional overall approach, we pretend (1) to establish the systematic, phylogeny and abundance of the digestive gland?s microbial taxa, which emphasis in the pigmented endosymbionts, and (2) to identify single molecular markers that allowed to track the presence of the pigmented endosymbionts in other ampullariid species.
